Is Gay Life Still Fabulous?

Dear Friends:

I have a question…

Me and some friends were discussing this over the phone last night. Is the gay world still as FABU as it used to be? Granted, we know that queers still know how to party, dress (well not all but most), and just be festive. However, some people believe that the internet (with its promise of anonymous/discreet sexual interludes) and the prevelance of the “DL” phenomenon has taken away from the overall glamour of what it used to mean to be gay?

So, are gays becoming as boring and normal as their straight counterparts? Or is it merely the lament of old queens for days long gone?

Hmmmmm…

  1. Oh absolutely, Mr. English. If not already having lost the glamor and glee it is on its way. It’s diluted into this constant guy-hoping via the Internet. It hasn’t become as boring as straight people, such a fate, which is worst than death, seems a bit far way, but it has taken a punch in the gut.

Guy hoping has always been big in the gay community, like in the 70s when you basically had sex with everyone you saw I here, but at least then it required you to go out in public, to a bar, or at a rally. Today when you see adds on Craiglists where men say things like “the door will be unlocked, come in I’ll be on the bed, blow me and leave” you can’t help that’s not exactly the kind of progress we were looking for. Some of made being gay comparable to a fast-food delivery service. Not good.

  2. We need a “Phoenix effect” in the gay world. I feel like we can be something better. We just need move forward

  3. Seriously? Boring and normal: that’s what we’re fighting for the right to be. IMO, any gay fabulousity was/is a way of establishing a group identity in the presence of a hostile world, so if we no longer need it … good riddance. I for one welcome a world where a gay man, to count, is no longer expected to be young, beautiful, flamboyant, well-coiffed, and in possession of a razor-sharp wit.
